Photo: The late Pakie Ryan, sport was his passion, friends have organised a special event in his memory.
Annually in March, the Pakie Ryan Memorial Event will take place in Newmarket-on-Fergus
This event has been organised in memory of the late Pakie Ryan, a very popular young man who died in April 2009 after a short illness from cancer.
Pakie Ryan was just 34 when he passed away on April 3rd 2009, having been diagnosed with melanoma 18 months earlier.
Pakie had been immersed in sporting activities throughout his life and had many friends in Newmarket and Shannon, where he had resided prior to his death.
He was generally regarded as a young man who gave so much to other people, young and old alike.
Following his untimely passing, the local hurling and soccer clubs approached the Ryan family, with a view to organising tournaments in his memory. After some consultation it was decided that a 10k run/ walk would be a fitting way to remember Pakie and this has been supported by the sports clubs in the village. Since then events have been added including a Cycle and 10 Mile run to help cater for all sporting enthusiasts.
On the day, five separate events will run simultaneously. These will comprise of a choice of 10 Mile run, 10k run, 5k walk or a leisurely cycle (30K/50K). Note: 10 Mile Riun & Cycle starts at 10:30AM; All other events at 11AM.
Participants will take part in only one of the events and the starting point for all three disciplines will be the Newmarket Celtic soccer grounds at 11.00am.
The event is open to people of all ages and everybody is welcome.
The entry fee for any of the events is Eur20 with children free. All monies collected will go to local charities.
